The Titanic was a high-tech marvel of its time.
A state of the art 40 ft. electrical panel controlled fans, generators, lighting and desalinating equipment. There were four elevators and room to room telephones in first-class cabins.
The crowning glory was the advanced wireless communication system – considered to be the most powerful setup in use at the time.
Confidence in the technological marvel was high. Trouble was unthinkable.
Sadly, the unthinkable happened. After striking an iceberg, the mightiest ship of its time sank in less than two hours.
Lacking a disaster plan or enough lifeboats for everyone on board – the results were tragic.
When the unthinkable happens
Sometimes, you just have to plan for the worst-case scenario. The Titanic is a dramatic example of things gone wrong. While you most likely won’t face such an extreme event, there are incidents that could seriously impact your business.
Most common are electrical surges caused by lightning strikes or other power failure. Storm or fire damage are also very real possibilities.
Any incident, even those not of “titanic” proportions, can damage your equipment, software, office space or data. Downtime is a given, and can seriously disrupt your business if not minimized.
It’s easy to become complacent and assume nothing bad will ever happen. As the Titanic disaster shows, however, things can go very wrong very quickly.
Every business needs a disaster plan
Should disaster strike, a well thought out response plan will help you get up and running again as soon as possible. As an example of why planning is necessary, consider what would happen if your office or other facility is damaged or destroyed:
- Would employees work from home or would you need temporary office space?
- Would employees be expected to use personal equipment, or would you buy new PC/laptops?
- What if personal equipment lacks compatible OS and applications like MS Office? Would remote users require installation of new apps or software?
