It’s a well-known fact that most New Year’s resolutions don’t make it past January. This year, we say, is the year we’ll: exercise more, eat healthier, write that book… (Fill in the blank here.)

Suddenly, it’s May and we can’t remember the last time we used the treadmill for anything other than hanging laundry.

Let’s do something different this time around and make this the year we conquer our IT wish list. You know the one; it’s filled with those items you fully intend to do “someday”: getting serious about backups and disaster prevention, establishing automated processes, streamlining systems, upgrading operating systems and hardware, etc.

First, we’ll cover some of the “what” and then we’ll cover the “how.”

Backups and security upgrades seem to fall to the bottom of our to-do list in the hustle and bustle of the day-to-day because they’re important, but not necessarily urgent—until it’s too late and your firewall has been breached. Don’t risk losing your valuable data and halting business activity; far better to plan and make this year the one in which “soon” becomes “now.”

System integration is another “to-do” that often gets characterized as a “nice to have” rather than a requirement, but it may be worth another look to see how much this mindset is costing you.

The ROI that comes from having all your company’s data talk to each other in real time can be enormous, especially as your company grows. After a certain point, integration more than pays back the cost of implementing it. Eliminating redundant tasks and streamlining operations free your team to do the work that matters most, boosting productivity, morale and profitability in one fell swoop.

Now, how do the people who keep New Year’s resolutions do it? They get accountability and support. For your health, that looks like a personal trainer or nutrition coach. To write that book: a publisher, writer’s group, or book coach.
