Not that long ago, Justin Dobner was managing a gas station and looking for his next great opportunity. He found that opportunity when he took a chance with Future Link.
As a network technician, his main responsibilities were to maintain network and remote desktop services for customers. After starting his career at Future Link in 2015, he became a service manager in August of this year.
Justin manages his team thoughtfully, always looking ahead to the next step and identifying potential problems that might be encountered. When he describes his experience, Justin talks about his humble beginnings with Future Link. He says he quickly realized that he had a lot to learn: “Oh, I’m in way over my head,” he thought at the time. “I don’t know what I’m doing!”
He actively sought outside training to fill those gaps, so he would be ready when issues came up in the course of his job.
Justin says his job can be a little stressful at times, but it fits his personality. He likes taking charge and using his knowledge base to resolve problems. He attributes his success at Future Link IT to his original position as a network technician, and starting at the bottom of the totem pole.
For the last four years, Justin worked his way up, encountering every possible scenario along the way. He worked closely with each customer, and is familiar with their needs.
Growing up in Aurora, Justin spent a lot of time with his grandmother in Lisle. She had an Apple and a Windows PC. This is where Justin’s love of technology began.
Justin says whenever he was playing with a computer, he had to be pulled away. “I was constantly looking at them,” he says. Between 5 and 8 years of age, he enjoyed the games, taking computers apart, and putting them together again. “I did break the computer sometimes,” he admits.
His two greatest influences are his mother and little brother. His mother has showed him what confidence is, by demonstrating it for him in her everyday life. His little brother, who passed away in 2011, had a big impact on Justin before and after his passing.
His brother, who saw the best in everybody, showed him how important it is to understand people on a personal level. This influence has helped him to be a better manager.
Today, Justin spends his days at Future Link IT tackling difficult issues and managing his team. He likes being a valued team member, and being relied upon when challenging situations arise.
Outside work, Justin is active in the community and in the non-profit organization, Maximus Foundation, which was established after his brother’s death to raise awareness about the dangers of synthetic drugs.
